District narrows MAP testing window, rolls out student focus groups for secondary campus planning

Collingswood’s assistant superintendent for curriculum briefed the board on Jan. 6 about assessment timing and secondary campus planning. Meredith said the district’s midyear universal screeners — DIBELS for lower grades and MAP for math — are intended to balance timely data collection with instructional time.
"A DIBELS test takes around 8 to 10 minutes," Meredith said, noting DIBELS is administered individually at lower grades. She said MAP testing is adaptive and staff have shortened the MAP testing window to two class periods where possible to reduce instructional disruption.
Meredith also said the district is exempting seniors from MAP testing this year because many seniors are in AP courses with tight schedules leading into AP testing; the exemption was a response to staff feedback. The district will continue to evaluate testing windows and exemptions in future years.
On secondary campus planning, administration said targeted community sessions for high-school and middle-school parents will be held (auditorium, 6:30 p.m.) and staff summarized student focus groups: high-school volunteers met during flex and middle-school students were pulled out during PE; staff said the groups were diverse and focused on open-ended quality-of-life questions about transitions and campus features.
Next steps: staff will present programmatic updates from elementary leaders at the regular meeting and share community feedback collected in focus groups during the February retreat.
