Hundreds of public comments in support of Edward B. Cole Academy during renewal hearing

A large group of parents, students, teachers and community representatives addressed the board Dec. 9 in support of renewing Edward B. Cole Academy's charter.

Multiple speakers described academic growth, targeted interventions for English learners and students with disabilities, generous reserves and stable finances at the charter school. Students and alumni testified about safe environments, leadership opportunities and programs such as after-school activities that families value.

School leaders and charter officials presented data and financial summaries to the board, including references to unrestricted reserves and multi-year financial stability. Several parents recounted personal stories of student growth and the school's supports for newcomers and students with behavioral or emotional needs.

Board staff opened a public hearing on the Edward B. Cole Academy renewal petition, heard testimony from the assembled supporters and then closed the hearing after public comment. Trustees will consider the renewal petition in accordance with the agenda process; the meeting record shows the public hearing concluded with no immediate action taken.

Separately, other public commenters raised concerns about district policies, special-education practices and communication or transparency on issues such as gender identity and opt-out rights; trustees and staff acknowledged those concerns and directed follow-up where appropriate.

The district will post the hearing record and move the renewal petition through the board process for a decision at a subsequent agenda item.
