Trustees on Oct. 14 narrowed their interview plan for applicants to the Area 1 trustee vacancy and agreed to both interview and make an appointment the evening of Oct. 29.
Mary Hernandez, the consultant assisting the board, advised limiting live interview questions to one or two per board member and keeping the same questions for each candidate to ensure fairness. Trustees discussed 20–30 minutes per candidate as a planning range and settled on an eight-question format with two minutes per question to allow consistent evaluation.
Agreed interview procedures include a lottery for the order of candidates (candidates may draw numbers), a separate waiting room so candidates cannot watch other interviews, timed responses (two minutes per question with a brief warning), and brief notetaking time between interviews. Trustees also agreed that while interviews and deliberations will be public, final candidate evaluations and selection interviews of finalists will involve closed-session personnel deliberations as allowed by law.
The eight questions the board will use include: district strengths and challenges and ideas to address them; core values and how the candidate balances values with student needs, community concerns and legal requirements; how the candidate stays informed about the community and schools they represent; qualifications the candidate would prioritize in selecting a superintendent; an example of a past board decision and how the candidate would have balanced competing interests; what it means to "put students first"; and a final closing question inviting candidates to say anything else about how their experience would make the board stronger.
What happens next: Candidates must apply by Friday (as announced); interviews and the appointment are scheduled for Oct. 29, with the swearing-in ceremony planned for the November regular meeting.
