Board approves interim superintendent contract, MOU for reading screeners; corrects gift amount

At its Oct. 14 meeting the Fullerton School District Board approved several procedural and personnel measures.
The board approved an interim superintendent contract effective Feb. 1, 2026, through June 30, 2026, naming Dr. Hammett to provide leadership during the transition. Trustees said the interim contract includes a provision allowing for an earlier end date if a new permanent superintendent starts ahead of schedule.
Trustees also voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with the Fullerton Elementary Teachers Association to provide teacher release time so kindergarten through second-grade teachers can complete mandatory one-on-one reading-difficulty screenings required by California law. The screening is designed to identify early signs of dyslexia and other reading challenges and the MOU funds sub-release days for teachers to conduct one-on-one assessments.
On the consent agenda, the board corrected an apparent clerical error in the gifts listing: an item previously shown as $45,900 was corrected to $459 before the board approved the consent items. The board also moved to approve minutes from its Sept. 16 meeting and adopted the Oct. 14 agenda.
Separately, the president announced a closed-session settlement vote the board approved 4–0 with an employee identified in the record only as "employee number 7617." The board did not provide further details in open session.
What happens next: The board scheduled a special meeting for Oct. 29 to interview and appoint a trustee for a vacancy and listed its next regular meeting for Nov. 18.
