Spokane County bans parking along Liberty Lake Road path to keep pedestrian route clear

On Feb. 17 the Spokane County Board of County Commissioners approved a revision to Spokane County traffic code 46.610.5701 to prohibit parking on the side of Liberty Lake Road that adjoins a well-used pedestrian pathway.
County Public Works staff, represented by Matt Zaracore, said parking on the pathway side forces pedestrians onto the traveled lane, putting people with strollers and cyclists at risk. "The path is only, I'm gonna guess, 5 feet wide. So when you park there, essentially, you block the path plus a few feet out into the roadway," Zaracore said.
The chair noted the county received one emailed comment in opposition but there were no in-person or online speakers. A commissioner moved to accept the county engineer's recommendation to revise the traffic code and ban parking on the pathway side of Liberty Lake Road and Liberty Drive; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Staff said the change applies to the pathway side only, not both sides of the road, and will be enforced as other county parking restrictions are. No implementation timeline or special funding was specified at the meeting.
The adopted change is intended to keep the pedestrian route clear and improve safety for people walking and biking in the neighborhood.
