Representative Reardon McLean urged the House Transportation Committee to approve House Bill 541 to designate a segment of State Route 42 in front of the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office as the Deputy Daniel Weston Shearer Memorial Highway.
McLean described Deputy Shearer’s service and the circumstances of his death while responding to a domestic violence call in May 2025 and said Shearer ‘‘paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting our community.’’ Sheriff John Hinton and family members attended the hearing and offered testimony about Shearer’s character and dedication. Hinton said Shearer "fit right in" with the department and described him as compassionate and committed.
Vice Chair Daniels moved that HB 541 be favorably reported; the motion carried unanimously. The committee chair thanked witnesses and again reminded members to sign the committee report, which was left open until 5 p.m.
What’s next: HB 541 was reported out of committee with a unanimous recommendation for favorable passage. If the bill advances, the designated highway will be a formal memorial to Shearer in Morrow County.
