Senator Patton presents first hearing to rename Cleveland stretch as John E. Gallagher Way

Senator Patton urged the House Transportation Committee to move forward with Senate Bill 182 at its first hearing on Nov. 18, asking that a short portion of Lorraine Avenue in Cleveland be designated John E. Gallagher Way to honor the late businessman and philanthropist.

Patton said John Gallagher was "a World War II veteran who served our country, faithfully and heroically," and that upon returning he "dedicated his life to philanthropy." Patton described Gallagher as the founder and chairman of Arrow International Incorporated, which he said "currently employ[s] over 1,200 people in Cleveland, Ohio," and said Gallagher and his wife donated land and operating funds to Urban Community School.

The sponsor said the renamed stretch would run from West 47th Street to West 50th Street in front of the Urban Community School campus and called the designation a "small, yet fitting tribute" to Gallagher’s local contributions. Patton closed by inviting committee questions; the committee did not vote on the bill during the session.

Why it matters: The proposal preserves a local naming honor tied to philanthropic gifts and veteran service and would place a commemorative name on a short urban stretch adjacent to a school campus. The hearing was introductory; further committee consideration will determine whether the bill proceeds to a formal vote.
