Milton staff report new trail use, Legacy Park parking design on track and DNR extension sought for MCPP work

Milton Parks & Recreation staff told the board on Feb. 20 that several park projects are moving forward, with short-term use already visible and construction timelines set for the coming months.
A staff member reported that the Milton City Park & Preserve (Veil Loop) opened last week and "we've had a lot of traffic back there," noting children fishing and heavier-than-usual use in good weather. Engineering and design plans for the Legacy Park parking lot are nearly complete and staff said construction is on track to begin in late spring with a hoped-for August completion; if needed, staff said phasing could preserve some fields for fall play.
When board members pressed for parking counts and tree impacts, staff said the additional capacity will require some tree work and that the design adds substantial spots behind the building; one board member asked whether 40–50 spots were planned. Staff also said they were exploring a write-out onto Route 140 to improve traffic flow and would consider shared parking arrangements with a nearby church during construction.
For the Milton City Park & Preserve active site, staff said designers asked the department to seek a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) grant extension because beginning construction over the summer would force pool closure and disrupt summer camps. Staff said they requested the extension to start work in September and that the same firm handling Legacy Park would handle MCPP.
Other planned improvements noted in staff reports include adding two tennis courts (raising capacity from four to six), a viewing pavilion, a fenced-in playground with artificial turf, and a full-depth reclamation of the parking lot surface. Staff also reminded the board of Birmingham Park cleanup day on Feb. 28 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and asked for volunteer participation.
The board asked clarifying questions about counts, phasing and traffic flow; staff said further details will be available as designs are finalized and that contractors are expected to break ground in early May if the schedule holds.
