Ohio appeals judge outlines court outreach program aimed at local students

Judge Marilyn Zeiss of Ohio's First Appellate District described a statewide civic education program she founded called Educating Tomorrow's Leaders and invited local schools and teachers to participate. Zeiss said the program exposes students to court structure and roles, brings classes to the court for behind-the-scenes tours and lets students try on judicial robes as part of hands-on learning.
"I immediately started a program called Educating Tomorrow's Leaders," Zeiss said, adding she has presented the program to more than 2,000 students across the state. She said the program provides materials to teachers, includes opportunities for visits to the courthouse and that her contact information and a handout were distributed to commissioners and attendees.
Zeiss told the board she would welcome outreach to city, suburban and township schools and said she had already been working with principals in some districts. Commissioners thanked her for the work and encouraged staff to pursue coordination with local schools.
The judge's presentation was offered during the public comment/presentation portion of the meeting; commissioners recorded their appreciation but made no formal action on the program.
