San Rafael unveils pilot gateway beautification at 2nd & Irwin with spring planting targeted

The subcommittee heard a briefing on Feb. 17 about a pilot gateway beautification project at the 2nd & Irwin entrance to San Rafael.
Priya Nixon (City Manager's office) said the project is part of the council's strategic-plan objectives for gateway and landscape improvements. "This is taking place at 2nd And Irwin," Nixon said, describing a low-profile planting palette and a concrete sign base with aluminum lettering so the work fits inside Caltrans right-of-way limits and avoids a lengthy permitting process.
Staff said they expect to finish 100% design plans this week, put the project out to bid within about a month and begin planting in April, subject to contract award. Committee members applauded the pilot as a visible, cost-conscious investment and suggested future iterations could include more artistic elements once the pilot proves durable and maintenance-friendly.
No council vote was required at the subcommittee level; staff will publish the design packet and proceed with the procurement timeline.
