Kieran Master, representing the solid-waste management district, briefed the board on the district’s plans for the year: monthly cleanups start next month at the Haythorn location (3230 East Haythorn), weekly e-waste collection runs Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the district collected roughly 45 tons of electronics last year. Master said the district has increased recycling over the past five years (exceeding 350 tons) and is developing composting and food-waste diversion efforts intended to produce compost for parks and the street department.
Master said mattress disposal will be available to residents starting next month (the district will accept residential mattresses only, per state law) and that the district funds operations through tipping fees rather than property taxes. He invited volunteers and civic groups to participate in cleanups and noted partnerships with Republic for demolitions and other support.
Commissioners thanked the presenter and asked clarifying questions about funding and services; Master confirmed tipping fees are the primary funding source and described existing partnerships that help the district deliver services at low or no cost to residents (TV disposal carries a $20 fee).
