Council members seek details on pension payment and temporary appropriations

Council members reviewed a set of temporary emergency appropriations that included funding for Ryan White services, park safety projects and a substantial pension payment. Councilman Gonzales asked whether the $83,000,000 figure represented the total pension payment and Guzman, the acting finance director, confirmed it is the total pension bill and explained that some charges reflect prior-year salary calculations and adjustments.
"This is the total amount of the pension bill," Guzman said, adding that the bill arrived after the original temporary appropriation for the 2026 budget was prepared and that some amounts reflect prior salary and labor agreement adjustments.
Council asked that details on the pension billing and timing be provided; Guzman said subsequent changes would be billed later in the year if necessary. Several appropriations for parks, pedestrian safety and bikeway work were presented with requests for more project detail ahead of final votes.
