"I'm here tonight to urge the school board to provide Mariners Elementary with fenced in, safe, secure grass space for the kids to play and receive instruction," parent Lindsay Bowler said, describing repeated incidents in which members of the public and off‑leash dogs accessed the school field during instructional time. Bowler said signage is routinely ignored and that staff must interrupt instruction to ask strangers to leave.
Another parent, Jenny Aronczyk, called for "thoughtful, modern safety upgrades, fencing that is tall, secure, and properly monitored," arguing upgrades can be made without turning campuses into fortresses and that fencing provides a proactive deterrent. Aronczyk cited national school‑safety data and said perimeter fencing provides parents and staff with peace of mind.
Superintendent Smith responded in the superintendent comments that the district "prioritizes the safety and also access to green space" and that staff will continue discussions about how to achieve both objectives at Mariners. Smith said the district remains committed to safety and will continue working with site staff and community partners to explore solutions.
No formal board action was taken at the meeting. Parents were told they could submit follow‑up materials to the district’s board admin and that the superintendent’s office would consider input as part of facilities planning.
