Board approves personnel readouts, policy changes, textbook display and CEQA finding in unanimous votes

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District board took several formal actions Tuesday, including closed-session personnel readouts and unanimous votes on routine and regulatory items.
Closed session readouts: President Weigand announced that in closed session the board approved the dismissal of classified employee number 20249 effective May 20, 2025, and approved release/non-reelection of 166 temporary certificated employees pursuant to Education Code Section 44954, effective at the end of the 2024–25 school year; the board directed the superintendent or designee to send appropriate legal notices. Both closed-session actions were reported as roll-call votes of 6 yes, 0 no.
Policy, calendar and consent votes: Back in open session the board adopted the consent calendar and approved a slate of items by roll-call votes that were recorded as unanimous. The board approved the public display of advanced placement secondary textbooks for a 30-day public review period, and voted to conduct first reading, waive second reading and adopt a set of policy updates — including updates to employee acceptable-use language to reference AI, adjustments to interdistrict transfer review language, updated UCP elements and an alternative pathway for differential graduation competency standards.
Budget and environmental actions: Chief Business Official Jeff Trader explained and the board adopted a resolution authorizing temporary interfund transfers to address cash-flow timing between July and December, excluding borrowing from the Irvine Company endowment. On facilities, the board adopted Resolution 18-05-25, approving a mitigated negative declaration under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) for the Costa Mesa High School stadium expansion after a public circulation period and staff-documented mitigation measures; trustees noted staff received one public comment and confirmed the district prepared a response.
Votes: Multiple roll-call votes were recorded as 6–0 throughout the evening for the consent calendar, policy adoptions and the CEQA resolution. Where roll-call names were read, trustees Weigand, Ersoylu, Murphy, Pearson, Anderson and Crane voted yes.
Board members said they appreciated community input and recognized classified staff as part of a resolution adopting Classified School Employee Week. Several of the business- and policy-related items will require administrative follow-up, notices or implementation planning by staff.
