Public works defends snow response after mailbox and sidewalk complaints

"We've got approximately 1,500 tons probably on hand," said the public works speaker (Speaker 2), adding the borough had purchased nearly 2,000 tons earlier and had 1,800 tons on order. Staff said a typical season uses roughly 3,500–4,000 tons and provided a preliminary estimate of seasonal salt spending.
Council members and staff described a two‑track operational approach: clear commercial and emergency routes first, then residential streets; issue notices of violation for persistent failures to clear sidewalks; and document mailbox damage to determine whether borough equipment struck a box or whether snow weight and berming caused the failure.
"One of the biggest problems is people can't get their mailboxes," the public works speaker said, describing the operational challenges of repeated plow passes and limited room to place snow in cul‑de‑sacs.
Staff also explained a capital plan item: ordering a large truck now (the build lead time is long) with an estimated chassis-and-body price of $226,467, to be charged to the 2027 budget when purchased.
Why it matters: the borough’s winter response affects public safety and daily life, and recurring mailbox and sidewalk complaints create political pressure for clearer enforcement and resident guidance. Council asked staff to continue response communications and to pursue enforcement where appropriate.
