At its Feb. 17 meeting, the Manassas Park governing body unanimously approved a proclamation expressing solidarity with Kurdish people affected by the conflict in Syria and declaring March 2026 as Kurdish Heritage Month.
The presiding officer read findings noting displacement, loss of life, and the role Kurdish communities have played in combating extremism and promoting coexistence, and the body voted to adopt the proclamation. An individual who accepted the proclamation at the podium thanked the governing body and said they had lived in the city for about 20 years and felt very much part of the community.
The governing body then approved a second proclamation recognizing Karen Miller for her service to the Blooms Crossing Homeowners Association and other civic contributions. The proclamation credits Miller with instituting best practices, overseeing inspections and fair appeals processes, supporting school-division activities, coaching and volunteer service, and strengthening relationships with local emergency services. Recipients and family members offered brief remarks of appreciation.
Both proclamations were adopted by voice vote; no recorded opposition was noted. The presiding officer invited honorees to come forward and accept the proclamations during the meeting.
