Montgomery EDC approves phased wayfinding sign package, tables downtown LED

The Montgomery Economic Development Corporation on Feb. 17 discussed and approved a refined wayfinding and gateway sign package for city entrances, but deferred a final decision on a downtown LED display.
A representative from the sign company described three principal approaches: a reverse-illuminated standard monument (like the existing device), a taller monument with an LED insert (option B), and a full digital gateway package (option C). He said option B would add an LED module priced at about $72,000, while option C—the larger package that includes additional structure—was quoted at about $92,000. He also described dimensions for examples under consideration (the existing monument is roughly 10 feet tall; proposed structures discussed ranged up to 18 feet tall).
Board members raised concerns about historic compatibility, the narrow base that could read visually as a pole, sightlines near the proposed Liberty Tree planting and how landscaping and parking would be affected. Several members said they preferred a monument treatment that looked ‘artsy’ and park-like for downtown, separate from a street-facing LED display that functions more like advertising.
At the conclusion of the discussion a motion authorized the city administrator to provide final sign-off for the phased sign rollout across the city, explicitly excluding the downtown LED option pending further discussion and design refinement. The board asked staff to return with refined drawings that better integrate monument aesthetics, base width and siting relative to the Liberty Tree and pedestrian circulation.
