Council hears $1.7M preliminary estimate for Magna Community Center repairs; staff urges quick RFP

An agency architect briefed the council on a recently received cost estimate for the Magna Community Center (Webster Center). The consultant’s preliminary estimate allocated about $1,000,000 for architectural finishes and about $700,000 for mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, for a combined estimate of approximately $1,700,000. Exterior site improvements were mentioned but the detailed breakdown will be provided later.
Staff and council discussed timing. One council member and staff noted construction bid pricing is favorable now and that waiting could increase costs; staff recommended putting the project out to bid quickly and said they might ask the council for direction at the Aug. 26 meeting. Another council member noted the city has contractual obligations related to turnover of the facility and urged timely action.
No binding procurement decision was made at the July 22 meeting; staff indicated they will provide a detailed cost breakdown and potentially bring an RFP authorization request to the Aug. 26 meeting.
