Magna Council approves Union Pacific crossing agreement for 8400 West

Magna City Council voted Oct. 14 to approve an agreement with Union Pacific Railroad and the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (MSD) to construct an at-grade rail crossing and complete sidewalk connections on 8400 West.
Tamara Woodland, who presented the agreement, said the contract carries "an approximate $75,000 cost to it that will come from the project budget," adding that about $60,000 covers the railroad crossing agreement and roughly $15,000 is an estimated construction adjustment to make the rail line fit the city's design. She recommended the city add Magna's signature to the document because "Magna is the long term owner of said crossing."
Council members asked about timing and staff said they would begin the bid process immediately and run bids concurrently with railroad execution, with an executed agreement anticipated "within a couple of months." After brief clarification that the approved version would include Magna's signature line, the council moved and adopted the measure by voice vote.
City staff said the MSD board approved the same agreement last week. Council members and staff framed the action as a long-standing priority to secure a safer crossing for students who walk in the corridor.
The council did not record a roll-call tally in the public record; the motion passed after the council voiced "Aye" and "Hearing none, motion carries." The project will be funded from the project budget identified in the agreement and administered through the MSD construction process.
