Girl Scouts ask Fort Thomas to add flashing crosswalk by Campbell County Public Library

Members of Girl Scout Troop 2231 told the City Council on Feb. 17 that they collected traffic data and community signatures to press for a new crosswalk by the Campbell County Public Library on Highland Avenue.
The students said they spent nine hours at the site over different days and recorded more than 2,130 vehicles going down the hill and an average speed of about 28.2 miles per hour, above the 25 mph posted limit. They also reported observing up to 40 mph and counted an average of 20.5 pedestrians per hour crossing the street without a marked crosswalk. The troop presented a petition with more than 150 signatures in favor of the project.
Council members and staff asked about methodology and confirmed a follow-up meeting and site visit with the troop scheduled for March 5, where staff will walk the proposed locations and discuss engineering options. City staff said they would review potential traffic-calming measures, including a solar-powered flashing crosswalk and speed-table or curb adjustments. The mayor praised the scouts’ data-driven approach and asked staff to coordinate next steps.
The request remains in the public-comment stage; no final funding or formal approval was recorded at the meeting. Council indicated staff will evaluate the location and return with options.
