Brentwood — During public comment Tuesday, residents pressed the Select Board for details about missing fund-balance and revolving-fund figures in the town report for 2024–25.
A resident asked why the town report omitted reconciled fund balances and said the discrepancy involves hundreds of thousands of dollars. Town staff replied that the auditors’ report is not expected until May; staff said they can publish unreconciled bank balances as a temporary step and will post the auditors’ report and supporting schedules on the town website once available.
Board members acknowledged the concern and described steps taken to improve financial controls, including revised policies and more regular monthly budget expenditure reporting starting next month. The board said some payments from 2024 have not yet been fully reclassified into the correct line items due to transitions in administration, and that staff are working with auditors to reconcile accounts.
Residents asked whether it is lawful to go into Town Meeting without reconciled audits; staff said expenditures are known but line-item reconciliation is outstanding and that the audit process is ongoing. The board committed to publishing audit results and providing reconciled information as soon as auditors complete their work.
