Commissioners opened their meeting with extended tributes to Commissioner Cynthia ("Cindy") Peach, who the board announced had died on Feb. 13, 2026. A county official said, “We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of our dear friend and colleague, Cynthia Peach,” and opened the floor for colleagues to speak.
A county colleague read Peach’s obituary in full, noting she was serving her fifth term on the Grand Forks County Commission and detailing her community service and family. The reader listed funeral arrangements: a visitation at the Alaris Center from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service following, and a memorial service at Elk Valley Lutheran Church on Friday at 11 a.m.
Several commissioners and staff offered personal remembrances in which they described Peach as an advocate for county employees and rural residents. One commissioner said Peach “used her seat to make sure everyone was taken care of,” and another recalled her as “the life of every gathering.”
The commission did not take formal action related to the vacancy at the start of the meeting; later agenda discussion addressed the appointment process and timing for filling Peach’s seat.
The board then returned to scheduled business, thanking staff who covered extra hours during a recent courthouse flood.
