The Union County Board of Commissioners opened the meeting with an invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance, adopted a proclamation honoring Charles E. Rose on his 100th birthday, and heard a single public comment before moving to business.
During informal comments, Rick Becker, mayor of Mineral Springs, spoke in favor of a USDOT BUILD grant application for two Highway 75 intersection projects intended to reduce bottlenecks between downtown Monroe and downtown Waxhaw. Becker outlined municipal matching plans and said the county's requested contribution would be about $633,000 to help secure what he described as a roughly $14 million grant.
The board also considered and approved appointments to the Library Board of Trustees and the Home and Community Care Block Grant advisory committee. Vice Chair Helms nominated Renee Huddle for the Fairview region library seat and Hank White for the Monroe region seat; other appointments included Beverly Osborne, Delwyn Eugene Archer and Christopher Day for library vacancies, and reappointments to the HCCBG advisory committee as listed in the agenda. Each nomination was approved by voice vote.
The board read the proclamation honoring Charles E. Rose and invited him forward for recognition. Commissioners offered brief remarks congratulating Rose and thanked staff and volunteers. The meeting closed with manager comments and a motion to adjourn.
Next steps: appointments take effect as specified in county procedure; the BUILD grant support was recorded on the consent agenda for consideration.
