Commissioners also discussed an elected public defender’s official salary (cited in discussion as about $80,545) plus the $91,410 contract, producing combined compensation and contract totals that commissioners said required explanation.
Commissioners noted the public defender’s office includes several county-paid deputies (discussion referenced five full-time deputy positions), and asked whether the county receives state reimbursement for any portion of those salaries. Another line item — $3,333.33 per month for mental-health-board cases — was questioned as possibly duplicative of duties handled by the public defender’s office.
Board members asked county administration to assemble contract copies and budget detail and to invite the elected public defender (named in the packet as Lynn Meyer) to a follow-up meeting for a thorough review. A commissioner volunteered to chair a small committee to perform initial legwork to locate contracts and answers.
