Organizers propose bringing Gus Macker tournament back to Muncie, project potential economic boost

Organizers representing Gus Macker told the Muncie Park and Recreation Board on Feb. 17 that they plan to bring the national three-on-three basketball tournament back to Muncie and are preparing a formal request to the parks department.

Aaron and Steve Craig said the event would be predominantly youth teams (about 70 percent) and projected about 200 teams and 10,000 attendees. "That's what they project, which we have 200 teams," one organizer said. The presenters estimated attendee spending could amount to between $3 million and $5 million in local economic impact, citing typical per-person expenditures on lodging, food and fuel.

Organizers requested guidance about park equipment and logistics, including 22 eight-foot tables, multiple bleachers (six 3‑rise bleachers to cover three courts), and expanded PA/sound beyond the department’s common system. They said some local partners — Destination Muncie and local churches or schools — may assist with equipment or sound needs. The organizers said the first year would be a single-year agreement with the potential to renew into a three-year contract if the initial event is successful.
