Eden Prairie honors students in 'Words in Action' Black History Month contest

Greg Leeper, chair of the Human Rights and Diversity Commission, introduced the Black History Month 'Words in Action' contest at the Feb. 10 council meeting and invited student winners to present their work.
Four student winners and additional honorable mentions were recognized. Ninth-grader Anya Mehta spoke about a video inspired by John Lewis’s call to “make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble,” saying the message shows how “real change happens when people speak up against injustice.” Other student presenters included Asa Shannon, Itisha Buramagunta and Ryan Altawil, each explaining how quotes by civil-rights-era leaders informed their art and writing.
Leeper said the commission received 19 submissions and that winners would be featured on the city’s website and social media. Certificates were presented to the student winners during the council meeting.
