At its Jan. 21 meeting the Soda Springs City Council approved paying roughly $1,300 to install a dedicated electrical circuit at the public library to accommodate a donated freeze dryer for the Soda Springs Community Gardens.
Kona Gentry, speaking for Community Gardens, said the organization secured a grant to purchase a freeze dryer and sought the city’s help to cover installation of a new circuit. Gentry said the garden has funds to buy the dryer and supplies but not to install electrical infrastructure.
Staff reported one bid at $1,300; council members noted procurement rules that typically require three bids for purchases above a threshold and asked staff to obtain additional quotes if needed. Councilors expressed support for the project, emphasizing limited daytime library strain and plans to prioritize community-garden members for access. The council made and seconded a motion to fund the electrical work and approved the request by voice vote.
Council also asked staff to confirm fiscal coding for the expense and whether any cost-sharing with partners is available before disbursement. The installation is to be completed so the garden can begin using the freeze dryer in the spring planting/harvest cycle.
