Council approves pay‑plan and firefighter staffing ordinances; denies 12‑unit setback variance

The Edinburg City Council approved an ordinance amending the city code (Title 3, Chapter 30) to update classifications and the compensation plan for non–civil‑service employees. The council moved with staff’s recommendation and approved the ordinance by voice vote.
On firefighter staffing, the council approved an ordinance increasing the authorized strength and minimum staffing so the department can staff a ladder truck out of Central. Fire Chief Omar Garza said the change allows the department to increase minimum daily staffing and operate the ladder truck from that station.
Council also considered a variance request for a 0.37‑acre tract at 513 South 4th Avenue, proposed by Jorge E. Vaina on behalf of Sashila Construction Group, which sought to apply smaller four‑plex setbacks to a proposed 12‑unit apartment building. Planning staff explained that developments with five or more units must meet larger setbacks (20 feet front/back, 15 feet sides). Council followed staff’s recommendation to deny the variance and the motion passed.
Finally, the council approved routine procurement awards and confirmed appointments to the Planning and Zoning Commission (Victor Daniek, Greg Vasquez, Eliseo Garza, Rudy Ramirez and Ruby Casas) as part of the meeting’s concluding business.
