Weaver students, volunteers and athletes honored at Los Alamitos Unified School District board meeting

Dr. Todd Schmidt, principal of Weaver Elementary School, delivered the board’s school report and highlighted a new theme for the year, which he called "Rocketing Toward Greatness 1 Star at a Time." He said Weaver was named among California’s top 100 schools and placed in the top half‑percent statewide on state assessments, and described programs meant to support the whole child, including social‑emotional work and expanded STEAM opportunities.

Schmidt described a second annual new‑student "signing day" — a celebratory welcome for transitional‑kindergarten, kindergarten and all students new to grades 1–5 — and noted a recent jog‑a‑thon organized by parents and PTA volunteers that raised more than $130,000 to support STEAM, library, physical education and intervention programs.

The board welcomed student participation: fifth‑grader Edith Coxall led the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Weaver Wailers choir performed under music teacher David Anderson. Two fifth‑grade students who accompanied Schmidt to the podium, Enzo Pitzak and Lola Stockel, were singled out during the presentation.

Dr. Schmidt introduced a long‑time volunteer as Weaver’s "hero of the heart," identifying Christine Coxhill for sustained service as a room parent, PTA and friends‑of‑Weaver board member and a support to school operations. Christine accepted the honor and said she was "deeply grateful for this honor," thanking administrators, parent volunteers, teachers and her family.

The board also recognized the Los Alamitos High School girls softball program and its coaching staff, led by Coach Rob Wilde, for a championship season. Principal Krauss and board members praised the team’s cohesion and community service, with the board noting the role of coaches and volunteers in student success.

After the recognitions the board recessed for photos and refreshments and planned to reconvene for the rest of the meeting.
