Students, teachers tout ‘Landell Literacy Nights’ as monthly family reading program

Vanessa Bridal, principal of Margaret Landell Elementary, told the Cypress School District Board of Trustees on Sept. 12 that Landell’s monthly Literacy Nights have become a signature family event aimed at encouraging reading and community engagement. “Reading opens doors to new perspectives,” Bridal said, describing the nights as opportunities for students to read, take AR quizzes, and participate in themed art activities with family members and volunteers.
Students from Landell described how the program has supported their learning and confidence. Fifth‑grader Carter said the event returned after the pandemic with PTA and staff advocacy and praised the revived program: “I am very happy that we brought literacy nights back.” Other students highlighted book clubs for older students, story time for younger children, and arts‑and‑crafts activities that let families participate together.
Bridal and presenting teachers credited community volunteers and staff for running the nights and said the program helps integrate writing and reading practice with family involvement. The board applauded the student presenters and thanked staff and volunteers for rebuilding the program after COVID‑era interruptions. The school announced its next Literacy Night for Oct. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m.
