After heat wave, facilities staff report isolated AC failures and outline fence and marquee work

Facilities staff updated the board on several facilities initiatives and emergency responses following a recent heat wave.
Jeff Ferrato outlined ongoing site assessments for trip hazards on sidewalks, noting clay soils and tree roots as contributors to sidewalk movement. He said the district is using diamond-blade cuts to address hazard areas and will bring specific remediation actions to the board.
On HVAC, Ferrato and Steve Montoya (HVAC technician) reported that roughly 4–5 isolated AC unit issues occurred during a week-and-a-half heat event affecting about 320 units district‑wide. Ferrato credited rapid troubleshooting by HVAC staff for minimizing impact: "Steve is up on the roof sweating out and doing everything in his power," he said. The district also provides maintenance for food-service refrigeration and is prioritizing units by site and need.
Ferrato described temporary perimeter fencing and underground utility markings in preparation for full fence replacements at selected sites, and presented a proposal to replace the failing marquee at Brea Olinda High School using the existing footprint to avoid additional DSA review. Board members asked about relocating the marquee for better visibility; Ferrato said relocation would require extra funding and a separate discussion.
Donna Castelli noted Prop 22 (state school bond) would require pre-committed projects and DSA plans to secure future funding, so the district currently is not lined up to benefit from immediate Prop 22 allocations.
What happens next: facilities will return with schedules and cost estimates for sidewalk remediation, fencing, marquee replacement and project phasing. The board encouraged patience from families while temporary fencing and construction occur.
