Meeker County approves new snow‑plow truck purchase and awards 2026 chip seal contract

Meeker County Public Works sought and won approval Feb. 17 for several pavement and fleet items included in its 2026 work plan.
Public Works Director Phil Schmaltz explained the county’s fleet strategy and asked the board to approve replacing an older tandem truck with a new 2027 Mack Granite chassis and Towmaster snow/ice body. Schmaltz said the truck chassis was budgeted at $375,000 but total cost for the truck plus snow and ice equipment was expected to be closer to $350,000 plus taxes and licensing; in discussion commissioners and staff cited breakdowns such as roughly $165,000 for the chassis and $195,000 for the snow/ice body.
The board approved the purchase by motion. Schmaltz said typical delivery times for chassis have shortened compared with pandemic delays and that manufacturers would begin building after approval.
Separately, the board awarded the county’s 2026 chip seal contract for CSAH 3 and CSAH 12 to Pearson Brothers of Hanover, Minnesota for an estimated total of $470,743.47. Schmaltz said the program this year focuses on sealing new pavements to preserve oil in the pavement rather than covering crack‑sealing or patching work; only two county roads were included due to rising chip‑seal costs.
The board also authorized Public Works to set a letting date for Justice Center parking lot paving and approved a professional services contract with MnDOT and SEH for preliminary roundabout geometric layout work at CSAH 34 and U.S. Highway 12 (county engineering share not to exceed $58,314.87).
