Beaver County official says outreach recovered unclaimed funds, reports higher collections so far this year

A county department head told the Beaver County Board of Commissioners at its Feb. 18 work session that recent outreach events have helped residents claim unclaimed property and that collection totals are ahead of last year.
The official said outreach booths on Feb. 5 in Chippewa, Feb. 10 at the mall center and Feb. 12 in Potter Township were accompanied by a representative of state Treasurer Stacy Garrity, who assisted residents in locating unclaimed funds. "It's been very, very successful," the speaker said, noting individual recoveries including $6,000, $1,500 for a veteran and $13,000 for another resident.
The department head also announced additional outreach dates, including a full-day event in Cambridge the following day and an evening session at Buford Falls Library on Feb. 25 to accommodate people who work during the day.
On the county's overall tax collections, the speaker said the county was ‘‘about $2,000,000 up from last year collecting taxes’’ at the current point in the reporting period, and participants in the exchange estimated a year-to-date collection rate in the low-90s ("93–94 percent"). The official said refunds affected the year-to-date totals and that final figures would be provided once the reporting process was complete.
No formal vote or policy decision was recorded on the topic during the work session. The department head said outreach will continue and staff will provide finalized collection numbers when they are available.
