Visitor urges Gadsden to lower flags and 'keep hope alive' in memory of Jesse Jackson

Mister Harris, who was allowed to speak by unanimous consent, addressed the council to call attention to the passing of civil-rights leader Reverend Jesse Jackson and to request that the city fly flags at half-staff for an appropriate period. "Keep hope alive," Harris said, quoting Jackson’s best-known phrase. He also repeated Jackson’s other expression: "I am somebody."
Harris described Jackson as an international figure who stepped in following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and urged the council and community to remember Jackson’s contributions. Council members and the mayor responded with condolences and said they would keep the Jackson family in their prayers.
