Charter commission adds Continuing Education Committee to bylaws

The Washington State Charter School Commission on Feb. 19, 2026, voted to amend section 6.1 of its bylaws to create a Continuing Education Committee as a standing advisory committee.
The motion, read into the record, described the committee’s role as providing early-stage review and engagement for schools in the commission’s continuing-education portfolio, examining relocation and continuity requests, clarifying readiness and risk, and preparing recommendations for the full commission. The motion made clear the committee would not take final action on applications or contracts; all final determinations remain with the full commission.
Commissioners asked for plain‑language clarification of the committee’s purpose during discussion and were told the committee would act as an advisory and preparatory body to help the full commission do more informed, transparent and student-centered deliberations. The motion requires a bylaws amendment and therefore an affirmative vote of at least six commissioners; the measure passed by roll call.
Next steps: staff and commissioners will establish operating norms for the committee, document meeting procedures and schedule an initial meeting to carry out early-stage reviews and report back to the full commission.
