Board approves nurse scope changes and an active-assailant liability rider

The board on July 16 approved two policy changes on first read affecting student health services and communicable-disease language and also approved an insurance rider related to active-assailant liability.
Julie Nash, executive director of student services, presented two policy revisions (JLC and JLCC) that remove an item saying school nurses would test for and report sexually transmitted diseases because district nurses do not perform testing. "We don't test for it. We don't have the ability to do blood draws or testing," Nash said, explaining why the reporting clause was being removed. Trustees noted that public-health partners in the community (Saint Johns public health and the county program) provide STD services and reporting.
Separately, trustees voted to approve an active-assailant firearm liability insurance rider with a not-to-exceed premium of $30,674. The motion to approve the rider passed by voice vote.
Trustees also approved the first-read policies as presented and directed staff to publish the red-lined policy language for second read and further review where necessary.
What happens next: The policies will proceed through the second-read process with the red-lined language available to the board and public, and the district will coordinate with public-health partners where testing or reporting is required.
