Connecticut Paid Leave eased postpartum finances and care access for a mother with sickle cell disease

Dillon, who was diagnosed at six months of age, said she used Connecticut Paid Leave after the birth of her daughter and found the process straightforward: “I actually used Connecticut Paid Leave when I had my daughter…All I did was contact my HR. They gave me the paperwork, and then I brought it to Teresa, which is the sickle cell social worker, and she…literally filled out the paper for me, walked me through it, and it was done,” she said. The podcast emphasized that clinic social workers often help complete and submit forms and track approvals.
Dr. Nelson said income replacement programs such as Connecticut Paid Leave can reduce the stress that triggers painful sickle cell crises and can be used alongside the Family and Medical Leave Act for job protection. “Take them together,” the host said, advising eligible workers to combine FMLA (for job restoration) with Connecticut Paid Leave (for income replacement).
The episode discouraged barriers to access: Nelson praised social workers’ hands-on support and noted that printed Connecticut Paid Leave information is posted in the clinic in English and Spanish so patients can see their options when they arrive for care.
