Adam Smith, the deputy public works director, warned that a band of snow is expected to move in near the morning rush and continue overnight, and urged residents to park off streets and give plows room.
Smith said rain has already begun in Des Moines and "precluded any pretreatment of the streets," meaning crews were unable to apply anti-icing before the snow. He said crews are preparing equipment, "loading salt, parking those trucks inside to stay out of the ring," and that the city expects to have "100 pieces of equipment out on the road at any 1 time."
The official asked residents to "park off the street tonight, put your car in your driveway if possible," and to "give [plows] some room, stay out of their blind spots, don't try to cut in between them as they're plowing in pairs." He said those precautions help crews clear roads more safely and efficiently.
The city will post plowing progress and any parking restrictions at dmsnow.org, and residents can sign up there for email and text updates. Smith said the forecast shows temperatures returning to the 50s next week, so the city expects this to be a short event. "We'll get out there, get the snow off the road, get folks to work and back home, and we'll get this storm under control and taken care of," he said.
Officials did not announce any formal parking bans or provide a precise start time for road closures; residents should check dmsnow.org for the latest updates.
