Parks manager briefs library commission on Parks & Recreation and Trails master plans; pickleball courts, trails and aquatics prioritized

Leah Kolick, the city's Parks and Community Services Manager, gave the Library Advisory Commission an overview of Murrieta's recently adopted Parks & Recreation Master Plan and the companion Trails Master Plan on Feb. 9. Kolick said the city partnered with RJM Design Group to gather input through stakeholder interviews, workshops, surveys and an online portal, totaling 3,977 community touch points.
Kolick said RJM used multimodal and randomized sampling methods for the survey and that an appendix describing the methodology (roughly 350 pages) is available on the city's website. The consultant's analysis produced five key strategies and prioritizations for community facility needs. Those strategies include expanding sports fields and adding pickleball courts, enlarging and enhancing trails (the Trails Master Plan was run concurrently by the same consultant), and prioritizing aquatics projects. Kolick said the city council identified a splash pad as a tier-1 aquatics project; a full pool replacement (Cal Oaks pool) remains a longer-term prospect.
Commissioners asked about timing and location: Kolick said construction began the week of Jan. 12 on three additional pickleball courts at Alderwood (referred to in the exchange as Aldeberry/Aldeberry Park) near Fire Station 4 and Loma Linda Hospital, with a ribbon-cutting tentatively planned for spring, contingent on no unforeseen delays. She reiterated that the Trails Master Plan was developed concurrently and that all master-plan documents are posted on the city's website for review.
Kolick told commissioners many of the recommendations likely can be implemented within operating budgets rather than through capital budgeting, though priorities taken to council will determine project timing and funding.
