The Manaway Town Council voted Feb. 19 to approve an additional $799 per month tied to the town's existing Crown Castle lease to allow Verizon to install added equipment on town property.
Town staff told the council Verizon will occupy added square footage but will sublease through Crown Castle, which holds the master lease for roughly 10,000 square feet at the site. A staff presenter said the $799 monthly figure results in about $21,000 a year of additional lease revenue for the town. “They're subleasing; Crown Castle will pay us and Verizon will pay Crown Castle,” the presenter said during the meeting.
Council members asked how the lease escalates; staff and council referenced the 2024 renegotiation that raised prior payments and discussed a progressive escalation tied to the original lease. One council member asked for the precise escalation rate; staff said the original lease language is in the municipal records and attorneys will review the amendment when it is provided by the carrier.
The motion to approve the monthly amount was seconded and passed by voice vote. Council members and staff said the next step is to receive an amended lease for attorney review and final formal approval before any new equipment is installed.
