State Building Code Council re-elects chair, confirms vice chair and finalizes committee and tag assignments

Todd, the council chair, accepted a nomination and was affirmed to serve another year as chair after a voice vote. Jay Arnold was nominated and confirmed as vice chair. The council reviewed the schedule for filling committee chairs and tag positions, noting five members had terms expiring and one East-side elected city seat remained vacant. Dustin, council staff, explained the 90-day holdover provision for members after their term ends and pointed members to RCW 19.27.070 for the governing statute.

Council members proposed and accepted volunteers for multiple tag chair and alternate positions. Angela Haupt volunteered to move to the building code tag; Roger Haringa offered to serve as the alternate for that tag. Ben O’Mara and Tom Young both expressed interest in chairing the MVP tag; the council conducted a member roll-call preference and confirmed Ben O’Mara as chair following the tally.

After reviewing standing committees and the tag assignments, the council voted to accept the full set of committee and tag appointments as shown on the screen and directed staff to post the assignments to the SBCC website. Chair and staff emphasized the process is subject to governor-appointed reappointments and that committee membership should avoid creating a full‑council quorum under OPMA rules.

The council’s actions were procedural and focused on governance: nominations, confirmations and administrative assignments. No policy changes were adopted in this agenda item; outstanding vacancies will be filled once the governor’s office processes reappointments or new nominations. The meeting moved on to the code-adoption schedule after these votes.
