The Pinelands Commission approved an application from the Lenape Regional High School District to install approximately 13,744 square feet of artificial turf at Shawnee High School.
Ernie presented aerial imagery and site details, saying the proposal covers areas beyond the end zones currently used for track and field practice; commissioners moved and seconded the application and a voice vote was recorded in favor.
A commissioner who voted for the application urged caution, saying the commission lacks standards for construction materials and should examine emerging science on artificial turf. "We really need to catch up to what the science is revealing now about artificial turf," the commissioner said, urging staff and commissioners to consider whether the CMP should be amended to allow the commission to restrict turf development if necessary.
Staff noted the topic will be discussed at the upcoming Policy and Implementation Committee meeting, where DEP scientists will present current science on artificial turf and its environmental effects. The commission did not adopt any CMP amendments at this meeting; the approval of Shawnee’s application proceeds with recorded vocal approval and a small number of abstentions noted during the roll call.
What’s next: staff will present scientific information at the committee meeting and the commission may consider policy changes if warranted by evidence in future sessions.
