Board expands eligibility for school nurse credentials to holders of multistate NLC licenses

The State Board of Education voted unanimously to adopt changes to State Board of Examiners and Certification rules (NJAC 6A:9B) that allow holders of a multistate Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) license to qualify for substitute school nurse credentials and school nurse endorsements in New Jersey, provided they meet educational and other requirements.
Presenters said the change responds to a petition and was intended to expand the pool of eligible candidates for school nursing roles. "This change allows the board...to issue substitute school nurse credentials to holders of not only the New Jersey issued nurse license, but now candidates holding a valid multistate license from an NLC member state," a presenter said. The proposal also recognizes multistate licenses for both standard and emergency certification pathways when candidates meet educational and CPR/AED requirements.
Board members thanked staff for fast-tracking the petition and moved the certification changes; the motion carried unanimously.
Department materials note consultation with the Division of Consumer Affairs and that New Jersey is an NLC member state.
