Commission approves school budget adjustments and construction funding measures

On Feb. 18 the Hamilton County Commission approved a set of education committee resolutions that amend school budgets and authorize construction funding and procurement methods.
Resolution 226‑15 amends federal projects, self‑funded projects, general purpose and school nutrition fund budgets, adding a combined set of adjustments read aloud by the clerk. Commissioners described 226‑15 as a "truing up" of bookkeeping items and said the revisions do not change maintenance‑of‑effort obligations. Commissioner Graham moved the resolution; Commissioner Hollander seconded and the resolution passed on roll call.
Commissioners also bundled Resolutions 226‑16 (appropriate up to $2,460,000 in bond funds for Hamilton County Schools phase 5 deferred maintenance and facility improvements) and 226‑17 (authorize the Board of Education to use a construction manager at‑risk procurement process for Gateway Career Technical Education Building renovation). Commissioner Graham said the construction manager at‑risk approach will better lock in pricing and save money; he recommended approval. The bundle passed. Commissioners requested updated cost estimates and a schedule; county staff (Lee) said those documents would be provided by the next day.
The commission recorded the votes and approved the education items. Next steps include staff distribution of updated project cost schedules and continuing coordination with the school system on construction procurement.
