Montebello extends art-contest deadline; city lists volunteer events, pet clinic, youth program dates

Montebello Parks and Recreation staff on Feb. 19 extended the submission deadline for a student art-and-essay contest tied to Black History Month and outlined several upcoming community events and youth-program timelines.
Staff said the contest, launched Feb. 6, invites Montebello and non-Montebello students to submit art or short essays; the city will display submissions at an event scheduled for Feb. 27 at Chet Holifield and will show the film King Richard. Because submissions were lower than expected, staff extended the deadline to encourage more participation.
Staff also announced City Service Saturday on Feb. 21 at Sanchez Adobe Park for beautification work, with roughly 12 sign-ups so far and an expectation of about 25–30 volunteers. A pet vaccine clinic is scheduled Feb. 21 at City Park at 9:00 a.m., and staff plans to expand clinic offerings to Acuna Park in the coming months.
Youth soccer registration is open through April 2 for children ages 4–15 at a fee of $70 per child; practices begin the first week of May and games are expected in late May through July. The Youth Employment Program (YEP) application period opens March 3 at 3:00 p.m., with a cap of 75 applications and anticipated hires of 40–50 students.
Finally, staff reminded commissioners about the community extravaganza on March 28 at City Park at 10:00 a.m. and invited commission members to participate and volunteer during the event.
