Commission appoints three members to Americans with Disabilities Act advisory committee

The commission appointed three members to the legislatively required Americans with Disabilities Act Advisory Committee on Jan. 9 during a regular meeting in Olympia.
Larry Delgado, the department’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion manager, told commissioners the agency ran a public recruitment and interview process to fill vacancies representing Regions 1 and 6 and an at-large seat. He said more than 20 applicants were considered and that interviews were held in November and December. Delgado recommended Amy Elber for Region 1, Joshua Resnick for Region 6 and Shamron Wolf for an additional at-large position.
"These candidates bring lived experience and professional expertise that will help expand access to the outdoors for people with disabilities," Delgado said when introducing the slate.
Commissioner Richard Garcia moved to appoint the three candidates as presented; Commissioner Smith seconded. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about how many seats remain open (staff said two vacancies remain, including Region 5), and the commission approved the motion by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
Commissioner Garcia, who led the internal effort, said the interview process yielded "phenomenal" candidates and expressed enthusiasm about forthcoming ADAC ideas. Commissioner Parker urged more regular engagement between the commission and the ADAC so commissioners can better understand ADAC goals and opportunities to support projects on the ground.
Delgado noted the statutory basis for the advisory committee, citing RCW 77.04.150, which requires the commission to appoint an advisory committee to represent hunters and fishers with disabilities on issues such as special hunts, modified equipment and access to public land. He said the committee must include members representing the department’s administrative regions and that the chair of the advisory committee is selected by committee members.
The commission’s action fills three vacancies but leaves additional outreach and recruitment underway for Region 5. Commissioners and staff said they plan to keep ADAC meeting notices accessible and invited commissioners to participate when appropriate.
The ADAC appointments were part of a broader meeting that also included a briefing on the draft Game Management Plan; the commission reserved formal action on the GMP for a future meeting in February.
