Freight board urges action on truck parking, expands grants for freight projects

Dilling said a truck‑parking implementation study produced six recommendations; one — funding for the Fort Lewis waystation — was acted upon, and five recommendations remain under consideration. She emphasized the human and safety aspects of truck parking, including restrooms, showers and safe parking. "We identify this as one of our top priorities," she said.
The board’s 6‑year investment program was described as allocating about $30 million in funding per biennium for eligible freight projects that range from bridge and road preservation to grade separations and innovative freight solutions such as inland intermodal facilities and truck‑parking public‑private partnerships. Dilling also outlined a planned inland intermodal feasibility study, with a draft due in September 2026 and a final report in June 2027, and noted outreach efforts intended to increase tribal participation in the grant program.
Commissioners praised the focus on safety and freight resilience and urged FMSIB to monitor ferry service disruptions where freight relies on marine links.
