At a Feb. 17 study session, district leaders reviewed progress on the Vancouver School District strategic plan, emphasizing student-centered experience and staff development, and previewed deeper community-facing updates with student voice planned for spring meetings.
Interim Associate Superintendent Janelle Ephraim told the Vancouver School District Board on Feb. 17 that the district’s strategic plan remains the organizing framework for operations and that the evening’s presentations would focus on two goal areas: student-centered experience and student-centered staff. “Our strategic plan is how we operationalize our mission of inspiring learning, growing community, each student every day,” Ephraim said.
Ephraim listed the presenters for the session and said the board would hear updates on middle-school student advisory work, early learning, special services and K–5 academic screening. She said the district is concentrating on practices that develop a culture of belonging, prepare students for next steps after graduation, and strengthen professional learning for staff.
Board members asked for follow-up briefings on several cross-cutting items, including how strategic-plan metrics will be shared with the public and whether portions of the strategic-plan updates could be presented at regular board meetings with students in attendance. Interim Superintendent said staff would explore a “walking and talking” spring update that integrates student voice for community-facing board meetings.
The session did not include formal votes; board members used the study session to request additional cohort-level and participation data (for example, on changes to middle-school athletics) to better align strategic goals with operational decisions. The board adjourned at 7:44 p.m., with staff noting a plan to bring higher-level strategic updates to the community in April and to continue deeper dives at study sessions.
Next steps: staff will prepare follow-up materials requested by directors, including cohort analyses, athletic participation data, and a plan for public-facing strategic-plan updates integrating student voices.
