Miami Lakes — Council members on Feb. 27 adopted two related items directing town staff to review local business licensing for compliance with federal sanctions and to prepare a resolution supporting enforcement measures related to Cuba.
Tax collector Dario Fernandez (introduced by the mayor) attended the meeting and urged the town to coordinate with his office to ensure businesses are licensed and renewed in compliance with federal law. During his remarks he said his office “stands ready to work with the town manager, mayor, and council to support compliance.”
Councilman Garcia and others spoke in favor of the measure; council voted to waive the normal notice provision for one of the items and then passed item 16F (waiver and resolution) and item 16B (resolution supporting federal compliance) in succession.
Why it matters: The measures are administrative steps aimed at aligning local licensing and enforcement with federal and state restrictions. The council also directed the manager to review businesses’ records and report back, which could result in license suspensions for firms found to be in prohibited transactions.
What’s next: Staff was directed to draft the resolution language and to coordinate with the tax collector’s office on review procedures and transparency measures.
