Members of the Sunnyside Arts Commission used the special meeting to sort outreach and programming logistics and begin next steps on a handful of local arts initiatives.
Staff and commissioners reported 16 submissions to the artist registry and agreed to compile entries into a shared Google Sheet for easier filtering by discipline. Chelsea, a commission member, said she had contacted the Washington State Arts Commission about a grant: “the new one is opening in March,” and she will circulate a meeting time for anyone interested in joining an application walkthrough. Julia reported contacting Harrison Middle School art teacher Victoria Phelps, who is willing to involve middle-school students in a February art project.
Commissioners also reviewed a youth-membership amendment the City Council recently approved. Jackie, staff, said the city code does not specify a precise age beyond requiring a high-school student; staff recommended leaving the application open 30 days to ensure sufficient applicants and said the code provision takes effect five business days after the summary is published in the paper of record.
The commission discussed a community mural proposed by local artist Madeline Alviso Ramirez for a Safeway back wall. Diana said she will draft a letter to Safeway corporate explaining the project and staff will check insurance/liability with WCIA and city staff (Farah) before proceeding. Commissioners discussed sidewalk art at Centennial Square and planned to confirm whether the sidewalks are city property; Jackie will check with city staff (Corey) and report back.
Other items added to future agendas included planning a spring-break rock-painting project to place painted motivational rocks in parks, and exploring a downtown music-in-the-park series using either city speakers or artists’ own equipment. The commission set its next meeting for January 30 at noon and asked staff to distribute agendas and minutes 24 hours in advance.
